Hose Fittings — Types, Thread Standards & Applications

A hose fitting is the critical link between a flexible hose and the rest of your hydraulic or fluid system. Get it wrong — wrong thread, wrong pressure rating, wrong connection type — and you risk hose blow-off, leaks, and serious safety hazards. Flowwell Components supplies hose fittings across all major types and thread standards to ensure your assemblies are built correctly, every time.

Fitting types available:

Crimp Fittings How they work: A ferrule is permanently crimped onto the hose end using a crimping machine, creating a fixed, high-integrity connection. Best for: Permanent hose assemblies in high-pressure hydraulic systems. The most common and widely used fitting type in industrial hydraulics.

Reusable Fittings How they work: The fitting screws directly onto the hose — no crimping machine required. Can be removed, reused, and reassembled in the field. Best for: Field repairs, low-to-medium pressure applications, or situations where a crimping machine is not available on site.

One-Piece Fittings How they work: A single-body fitting where the socket and nipple are combined, crimped directly onto the hose without a separate insert. Best for: Clean, compact hose assemblies in modern hydraulic systems.

Two-Piece Fittings How they work: A separate socket and nipple — the nipple is inserted into the hose bore before the socket is crimped over the outer. Provides excellent grip and seal on the hose. Best for: Higher-pressure applications and older or legacy hose assembly systems.

  • Thread standards available:JIC (Joint Industry Council — 37° Flare) The standard thread type for most hydraulic hose assemblies in the UK and internationally. Metal-to-metal sealing via a 37° flare seat.BSP (British Standard Pipe) The predominant thread standard across UK and European fluid systems. Available in parallel (BSPP) and taper (BSPT) variants.ORFS (O-Ring Face Seal) A flat-face port with an O-ring seal — the highest-integrity thread connection type, used where zero leakage is critical. Increasingly specified in modern hydraulic systems.

NPT (National Pipe Taper) The North American standard thread type — commonly required on imported plant and machinery, and internationally specified equipment.

Metric Metric thread fittings to suit European-specification hydraulic systems and machinery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between crimp and reusable hose fittings? Crimp fittings are permanently attached to the hose using a crimping machine and are the standard choice for professional hose assemblies in high-pressure systems — they are more secure and reliable under sustained pressure. Reusable fittings screw directly onto the hose without any tooling, making them ideal for field repairs or lower-pressure applications where a crimp machine is not available.

What is the difference between one-piece and two-piece hose fittings? One-piece fittings combine the socket and nipple into a single body that crimps directly onto the outside of the hose. Two-piece fittings use a separate nipple inserted into the hose bore and a socket crimped over the outside — they generally offer a stronger mechanical grip and are often preferred for higher-pressure applications.

Which thread standard do I need — JIC, BSP, or ORFS? JIC (37° flare) is the most common thread type in UK hydraulic hose assemblies. BSP is standard across UK and European fluid systems. ORFS provides the highest-integrity seal and is increasingly specified in modern systems where zero leakage is critical. If you are unsure which thread type your system uses, contact our team and we will help you identify the correct fitting.

What hose sizes and pressure ratings do you cover? We supply fittings across a full range of hydraulic hose sizes. Contact us with your hose specification and system pressure and we will confirm the correct fitting.

Can I order mixed quantities across different thread types and sizes? Yes. We supply both single-item quantities for repairs and large mixed orders for hose assembly shops and project supply. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

Do you supply internationally? Yes. Flowwell Components ships to customers across multiple continents. Contact us for international shipping options and lead times.
