Pipe Fittings — Types, Materials & Applications

Pipe fittings connect, redirect, adapt, and terminate pipework in hydraulic, pneumatic, and general process piping systems. A poorly specified fitting — wrong material, wrong thread, wrong pressure rating — can mean leaks, downtime, and costly remediation. Flowwell Components takes the guesswork out of selection, supplying the right fitting for the job every time.

Fitting types available:

Compression Fittings How they work: Create a leak-proof seal by compressing a ferrule or olive against the pipe wall as the nut is tightened. No welding or specialist tooling required. Typical applications: Hydraulic systems, instrumentation lines, pneumatic circuits, general fluid transfer.

Socket Weld Fittings How they work: Pipe is inserted into a recessed socket and welded in place, creating a high-integrity permanent joint. Typical applications: High-pressure hydraulic systems, steam lines, process pipework, refineries.

BSP Threaded Fittings (British Standard Pipe) How they work: Male and female threaded connections sealed with PTFE tape, thread sealant, or bonded seals. Typical applications: Standard UK and European fluid systems, compressed air, water, oil.

NPT Threaded Fittings (National Pipe Taper) How they work: Tapered thread that tightens and seals as it is made up, commonly used in North American-specification equipment. Typical applications: International projects, OEM machinery, imported plant and equipment.

Materials available:

Stainless Steel (316 / 304 / 321/ 347) Properties: Superior corrosion and chemical resistance, hygienic, suitable for aggressive media and washdown environments. Typical applications: Food & beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical processing, offshore, marine.

Carbon Steel Properties: High strength, cost-effective, suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. Typical applications: Hydraulic systems, steam, oil & gas, heavy industrial plant.

Other materials available including, Brass, Nickel Alloys, Copper Nickel, Duplex Stainless Steel, Chrome Molybdenum.

Pressure ratings and sizes:

  • Available across a full range of metric and imperial pipe sizes
  • Pressure ratings to suit hydraulic, pneumatic, and process system requirements
  • Various pressure ratings and sizes are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between BSP and NPT threaded fittings? BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the thread standard used across the UK, Europe, and much of the world. NPT (National Pipe Taper) is the North American standard and is commonly found on imported plant and OEM equipment. We supply both — if you are unsure which you need, our team can advise based on your system or equipment specification.

When should I use compression fittings versus socket weld fittings? Compression fittings are the faster, more flexible option — no welding required and they can be disconnected and reassembled if needed. Socket weld fittings create a permanent, high-integrity joint and are the preferred choice for high-pressure applications or where vibration and thermal cycling are a concern.

What materials do you supply pipe fittings in? We supply pipe fittings in stainless steel (316 and 304) and carbon steel as standard. Many other materials are available as stated above. Stainless is the preferred choice for corrosive environments, food-grade systems, and offshore applications. Carbon steel suits high-pressure hydraulic and industrial systems where corrosion resistance is less critical. Contact us if you require an alternative material.

Do you supply fittings to metric and imperial sizes? Yes. We stock fittings across both metric and imperial pipe sizes to suit UK, European, and international specifications.

Can you supply fittings for high-pressure hydraulic systems? Yes. We supply fittings rated for hydraulic system pressures. Contact us with your system pressure requirements and pipe specification and we will advise on the correct product.

Do you supply internationally? Yes. Flowwell Components ships to customers across multiple continents. Contact us for international shipping options and lead times.
